Description
A leading Syrian thinker doubts that the Palestinians would establish a modern state, where laws are respected and authorities operate properly. "Will the state that the Palestinians would establish be a true state?" Michel Kilo asked in an opinion piece in Beirut's leftist daily AS SAFIR on Nov. 22. "Will it be an entity that deserves to be called a state? Will it have the characteristics of state, including impersonal, unbiased, public and comprehensive institutions and agencies, governed only by laws that are respected by every official? Will its laws safeguard the separation of authorities and the representation and defense of people's interests, inside and outside the state?" he added in the pro-Syrian newspaper. "I have no doubt that the Palestinians are obsessed with having a state of their own. This is their ultimate goal; they have given martyrs for making it come true, and they live on this prospect," said Kilo, a 70-year-old human rights activist who has been jailed in Syria for opposing its regime. He was released in 2009 after serving a three-year term in jail for signing the 2005 Damascus Declaration, which called for "peaceful, gradual," reform "founded on accord, and based on dialogue and recognition of the other."
